250 years ago, the kingdom of Ascalon faced a dire threat. Hordes of bestial charr advanced upon the land, intent on conquest. In a desperate bid to defend his realm, King Adelbern summoned the all-powerful Foefire, a potent magical force, to repel the invaders. However, the Foefire's power proved to be a double-edged sword, as it burned both the charr and the human inhabitants of Ascalon alike. While the charr corpses smoldered, the slain Ascalonians arose once more, transformed by their king's rage into ghostly protectors charged with guarding the realm forever.
The once mighty kingdom of Ascalon became a haunting shadow of its former glory, its people exiled to the neighboring nation of Kryta. Centuries later, the descendants of Ascalon found themselves besieged on all sides, their very existence threatened. In a bold move, Queen Jennah of Kryta sought to negotiate a treaty with the hated charr, a last-ditch effort to save humankind.
Yet, one obstacle remained: the charr legions refused to sign the truce until their most prized possession, the Claw of the Khan-Ur, was returned from the ruins of fallen Ascalon. Undeterred, a mismatched band of adventurers, each plagued by their own personal ghosts, set forth into the haunted, war-torn land to retrieve the Claw. Without this artifact, there was no hope for lasting peace between human and charr.
However, the undead king who now rules Ascalon will not relinquish the Claw easily. Furthermore, not everyone desires peace between the two factions, and the adventurers must contend with those who would see the conflict continue. The fate of both Ascalon and the fragile peace hangs in the balance as the small band delves into the heart of the haunted kingdom, facing both the supernatural and the machinations of those who would see the world plunge back into war.
The journey is fraught with peril, for the undead Ascalonians, transformed by the Foefire's devastating power, still roam the land, ever vigilant in their duty to guard the realm. The adventurers must navigate the treacherous ruins, confront their own personal demons, and ultimately, make a choice that will determine the future of Ascalon and the relationship between humans and charr. The stakes could not be higher, and the consequences of failure are unthinkable.
